The Story Of Our Sweet Bridgewater Origins

One of New England’s Premier, Award Winning, Confection & Chocolate makers
Our History:
In 1988 Peter May, a New York City
based financier and philanthropist had recently acquired the Bridgewater Village Store after a decade of neglect, saving it from bankruptcy. In 1994 Peter hired Erik Landegren, a Swedish chef to improve the quality of the food offered. Erik spent his weekdays running the Bridgewater Village Store and his weekends working for the May’s. As part of improving the quality, Erik began making bread, ice cream, homemade salads and eventually chocolate. Bridgewater’s first confections were created in the basement of the Bridgewater Village Store in 1995. Then one year later in 1996, Andrew Blauner married Peter’s daughter Leslie.

Bridgewater Village Store The Birthplace
The Village Store on Main Street has been the heartbeat of Bridgewater Connecticut for generations. For over a century, the large clapboard structure with its 50 foot steeple has served as a community hub and gathering place for weekenders, full time residents and tourist to this rural hamlet. The building proudly stands today looking much like it did 100 years ago when it was the site of the first mail order business in the U.S.
The Bridgewater Village Store is the only store in the town and offers a selection of groceries, many which are produced locally. Inside the store is The Bridgewater Bistro, a restaurant serving breakfast lunch and dinner. The store has stayed true to it’s roots preserving the small-town character.
Bridgewater Chocolate’s logo is a representation of the store.
